Habit 5

Seek first to understand, then to be understood
Habit 5

It's not about the "right" way to listen, it's about a way to listen.

"Seek first to understand, then to be understood" comes from the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by FranklinCovey.

This is another powerful angle of listening which invites us to ask open questions to ensure we actually understand what is being said before forming an argument or rebuttal.

Easy right? Well..... kind of.... it depends. It can come to you easily if you're curious about something and are trying to learn.

Less so if you've already formed a strong opinion about something. This can seriously impact our ability to do quality listening.

In short, this is inviting us to explore listening from an "after you" perspective.

"The truth is easier to see when we're not afraid of what we'll find"
